VORPAL CRAFTING GUIDE AND USEFUL LINKS

Crafting is actually pretty easy now that there are so many help-aids out there. This guide is mostly the help of many other people and guilds that have put a lot of time and virtual expense into their experimentation with the crafting process. I think we all owe them a vote of thanks and many will be listed at the end of this guide to honor their efforts.

Example of Crafted Weapon and an upgraded Item...

CHAPTER 2: How to make a TIER I Upgrade
CHAPTER 3: How to make a TIER II Upgrade
CHAPTER 4: How to make a TIER III Upgrade
CHAPTER 5: How to make a TIER III Dual Affinity Upgrade
CHAPTER 6: Cleansing the Greensteel Crafted Item

---------------------------------
CHAPTER 1: Making a "Greensteel" Blank

Steps Covered:

1) Pick out a type of weapon or item (cloak, goggles, etc.) that you want to make.

2) Pick the attributes you want your weapon or item to have. We call it a crafting recipe. It has the ingredients listed that you will need to start with.

3) Run all five(5) vale quests collecting the shavarath stones.

4) Collect ingredients (ie. Chipmunk Funk, Lily Petals, etc.) from the Vale slayer area and the five quests.

5) Combine four(4)ingredients plus the ebberon cells(bought by the alter) as your given recipe says on the alter of fecundity to create three(3) sub-ingredients called "Elements." (Filiments of Toil, etc.)

6) Combine the Shavarath stones on the alter of Fecundity to make a Signet stone.

7) Combine the three(3) newly made elements, another ebberon cell, and the Shavarath Signet stone.

8) Pick up the Greensteel Blank, do not equip it if you want to sell or pass to another toon. Equiping your blank will perma-bind it to your toon.

First questions is- What is a "Greensteel" Blank anyway?

When an artist wants to paint a picture, he goes out and buys a blank canvas. In DDO, when you want to make a crafted item or weapon, you make a 'greensteel' blank and the first thing you want to do is decide whether you want to make a weapon for your character or an item (necklace, helm, bracers, etc.).

Now as I've been teaching people how to craft, some have told me that deciding what to make is part of their problem. I would suggest making an item/weapon from the popular list as your first project. There is good reason why they are so popular, and since you don't have a lot of experience with crafting, its a good place to start. Here is a list of the most popular item/weapons, you may use the item recipes with any greensteel ITEM blank; and you may use the weapon recipes with any greensteel WEAPON. You CAN NOT use an item recipe on a greensteel weapon or visa versa.

STEP 1 & 2:

You can have up to 10 weapons in your inventory and you can use up to two weapons at a time. You can ONLY have one item on your character. After you have run the shroud 20x's you have the options of taking a "cleansing oil." You can use this to "cleanse" the first item you made so that your character may wear two items now! Can't wait to get mine!

Don't worry right now about what ingredients you need or what you have to do to make the item. Just decide on an item/weapon that you want to dream about making at this point. Their are more popular item/weapon builds and I'll continue adding them, but this will give you a start.

POPULAR ITEM UPGRADES

Super Immuno Item -Fighters like this item because it protects them from just about everything while freeing up a slot(s) for more enhancements!!

Mega Mana & +6 Charisma Skills -This is every Sorcerer's Dream, but it works well for any character that you would like to have more, more, & more SP on. The bonus is that if you make all three tiers, you additionally get +6 to your charisma skills like UMD, haggle, diplomacy, etc.!

The Ubber Cleric Item -Want more mana, want an even better will save, want +6 WIS on the same item..POOF!... you're wish is their command. Better than a microwave and top ramen.

The Super Fire Resist Item -Ever hate fighting Elder Fire elementals or been wiped out by the Pit Fiend's fire blasts? Well now you can say, NO MORE! This item blocks out 45 points of fire damage and bites back too. Your enemy has a chance of receiving a fire blast back at them and a few fire blast clickies to play with in between...lol. You can also make this item as acid resist, shock resist, and cold resist.

POPULAR WEAPON UPGRADES

The Acid Blast-Earth Grabber Weapon -Talk about nice crits! On a greataxe build this puppy is doing 175+ points of acid damage. Plus, there is a chance for your weapon to earth-grab the enemy and hold them and just in case that's not enough, you can also summon 2 large earth elementals to help you out.

The Undead's Nightmare Weapon -Dawn this weapon, and some spectral gloves and the undead are going to run the other direction. This weapons adds +4 insight bonus to AC, gives you 1 use of True Resurrection between shrines, plus does up to 6d6 additional damage. Holy pure good is always a great combo!

The Haste Junkie's Dream Weapon -The haste clickie of haste clickies...this castes haste on you as a 12th level caster, plus there is a chance that your enemies hits will give you haste or knock them down, either way, you gotta love it as a fighter. Then there is the damage, shock, shock burst, shock blast--on a natural 20 you're doing mega shock damage!

The Smoke'n Hot, +9 Clever Stick -Come all ye wizards and rogues and get your smoke'n hot +9 stat item! Yes, I did say, +9, but it is a weapon you must hold. However, +9 is +9! Plus, there is a random chance that a fire blast will go off in the face of your attacker. *smile* You may also build this with str, con, dex, or char as the stat with a slightly different focus.

STEP 3 & 4

Now that you have decided on an item, lets see what you need to create this wonderful masterpiece. For us today, we're going to make the Ubber Cleric Item, my cleric can always use more mana and wants to replace his +6 wisdom helm with the crafted item. In order to make this item (or any weapon as well), you are going to have to run some quests to gather ingredients and shavarath stones. (You can buy the ingredients off of the AH, but you will still have to run the five vale quests at least once to gather a shavarath stone from each because these stones bind.)

So, now you have run the Vale quests: Dancing with Devils, Rainbow in the Dark, Ritual Sacrifice, Let Sleeping Dust Lie, & The Coalescence Chamber a bunch of times. In your hands you now have 5 Shavarath stones:

SHAVARATH STONES

VALE INGREDIENTS

Chipmunk FunkGreen Briar TwigBitterscrub FungusLocust HuskGlistening PebblesLily Petals
Coal-DustCoal-RainbowDevil-RitualVale-DustRainbow-DevilVale-Ritual

STEP 5

So our next task is to determine how many funk, twig, fungus, husk, pebbles, & petals we need in our recipe. Each greensteel blank has three elements that we have to mix up from the ingredients we get from the Vale quests. These are the possible elements that you can make from the vale quest ingredients (funk, lily, twig, etc.) you also need to combine an eberron cell which we will discuss further down:

POSSIBLE ELEMENTS

Filament of ToilOre of TravailViolet TaperRed TaperYellow TaperGreen Taper
Blue TaperWondrous BalmWondrous JewelWondrous OilWondrous Scarab

If you remember our item is the "Ubber Cleric Item," and we needed to make a helm. So we use a Crafting Calculator to get the recipe. At the calculator sight, choose the drop down menu for "Create Greensteel Item" and select HELM. You will get a list that looks like this:

Filaments of Toil: Locust Husk, Greenbriar Twig, Lily Petal, Glistening Pebbles
Wondrous Jewel: Locust Locust Husk, Bitterscrub Fungus, Chipmunk Funk (Greenbriar Twig or Glistening Pebbles)
Violet Taper: Locust Husk, Lily Petal, Glistening Pebbles, Chipmunk Funk

Therefore we know that we need to gather 12 ingredients and that we need 3 husks, 1 twig, 2 lilies, 3 pebbles, 1 fungus, & 2 funk. (Ok, so I look in my pack, WOW, I have just the right ingredients....lol)

Great, now we are ready to travel to the only Alter you can build a Greensteel Blank on, it's the alter in Meridia below the Inn. You can not Imbue a power shard on this alter or upgrade your item/weapon here; that can only be done on the 3 alters in the Shroud Quest. Follow the ramp down and you see the Fecundity Alter (By the way, Fecund means imagination or fruitful :)

Now you need to buy 4 Eberron Energy Cells from gentleman next to the Fecundity Alter. Its a little pocket jab, but not too bad. First we will make the "Filaments of Toil." So on the alter of fecundity I'll place a husk, twig, lily, pebbles & an eberron energy cell. Push the mix button ..and 'crunch'....in your backpack (or bag if you have auto gather on) is now your element. Set that aside and mix the next 2 elements, a wondrous jewel & a violet taper. Set those aside also.

An Example of what ingredients make an element and how to make it:

Combine these ingredients on the Alter in Meridia (Alter of Fecundity):

That will leave you the element in your backpack that looks like this:

Filament of Toil

STEP 6

Take the 5 shavarath stones and place them on the alter (you may have already done this to get the Shroud quest), mix the stones to create the shavareth signet stone.

STEP 7

You're almost there. Now place the Signet stone, you're three elements, & an eberron energy cell (or in some cases, a large horn which you can only get from part V of the Shroud) on the alter. Push MIX one last time and victory! You have your new Greensteel Blank!! Our blank is now ready for....dun, dun, dun... THE UPGRADE.

STEP 8

Don't equip your weapon or item unless you want to have it on that toon. Equipping your newly made greensteel item will perma-bind it to that toon, so be careful.

Congrats, you can now begin Chapter II.
---------------------------------

CHAPTER 2: How to make a TIER I Upgrade
Steps Covered:
  1. 1) Making a Focus, Gem, & Essence
  2. 2) Alter of Invasion
  3. 3) Imbuing the Power Shard
  4. 4) Upgrading the "Greensteel" Blank

STEP 1: Making a Focus, Gem, & Essence
For every tier upgrade you will be making three elements, a type of focus, a type of gem, and an essence. Each recipe will give you the steps to making the type of focus, gem, & essence you need in order to get the result you wish.

These ingredients are constructed on an alter in the Shroud raid itself. You collect the ingredients for Tier I, II, & III from chest rewards in Shroud Parts I, II, III, IV, & V. For the first upgrade you will use only these ingredients:

Sm Devil ScalesSm Glowing ArrowheadSm Gnawed BoneSm Length of Inf ChainSm Twisted ShrapnelSm Sulfurous StoneShavarath Low Energy cellPower Shard

These can be combined to make these types of Essences (Diluted Essences come from small ingredients):
Diluted Material EssenceDiluted Ethereal Essence

Or..they can be combined to make these types of Gems (Cloudy gems come from small ingredients):
Cloudy Gem of EscalationCloudy Gem of DominionCloudy Gem of Opposition

And lastly, the many Focuses that can be made (Inferior focuses come from small ingredients):
Inf Focus of AirInf Focus of EarthInf Focus of FireInf Focus of Neg EnergyInf Focus of WaterInf Focus of Pos Energy

Now that you have some basics, you are ready to start forming your Tier I upgrade...

STEP 2: The Alter of Invasion

At the end of Part I of the Shroud Raid, you will triumphantly run up to the shrine area and loot your chest. However, you should notice an "alter" also. This is the Alter of Invasion. Here you will assemble your first upgrade!

If you will remember, we are constructing an "Ubber Cleric Item." We made the greensteel blank. Now we need to follow our recipe to make the Essence, Gem, and Focus. This is our recipe for now, ignore the energy cell and power shard:

Make each item one at a time until you have the three ingredients. You can construct these items and perform the upgrade at the end of Part V, and most parties prefer you to wait until then so you don't hold up the party crafting, I also advise you to do this because you will get more help and make less mistakes. Once you have your three items made you are ready to "Imbue" the power shard.

STEP 3: Imbuing the Power Shard

Put the three items you just made, the Essence, Gem & Focus on the Alter with the Power Shard and another Shavarath Energy cell. It will look like this:

Diluted Ethereal EssenceCloudy Gem of EscalationInf Focus of Neg EnergyPower ShardShavarath Low Energy cell

When its done it will look something like this:

STEP 4: Upgrading your greensteel blank...

On this last process you just need these three items: 1) The greensteel blank, 2) The newly imbued Power Shard, and 3) Another Shavarath Low Energy cell. Crunch them one last time and you are now the owner of a Tier I upgrade! Oh.. look.. shiny. And by now, you're probably officially hooked on the crafting process and will be running shroud 24/7 and trading your wife and children for ingredients.

CHAPTER 6: Cleansing the Greensteel Crafted Item

You cannot equip more than one Green Steel Clothing Item at a time (Weapons do not count). Doing so will cause you to take damage every few seconds until you die. If you receive a Raise Dead, or Release your Soul, you will likely die almost immediately after coming back to life. This is due to the Taint of Shavarath on the item.

In order to remove the Taint of Shavarath, you must combine your tainted item with an Essence of Cleansing in the final Eldritch Device within the Shroud. You Receive an essence of cleansing as an end reward choice every 20th Shroud completion.

USEFUL LINKS TO CRAFTING TOOLS AND INFORMATION

Also, all weapons are possible to make now, like Great Axes. There are also other accessories available too. So check out the new equipment options at the websites below. CAUTION!! The new items are crafted with other items like a large horn in stead of the eberon cells. So be careful in reading the green blank's recipies. We will be adding to this guide and updating it regularly, but for now, here are some sites that offer a fair amount of help:

DDO Crafting Helper
This site offers a calculator type presentation, but does not offer much in the way of helping you understand how to start the process.

Storm Lords Crafting Page by Raidon of Thelanis
This is a very good site, seems to offer a lot for the beginner craftsman. I personally know that Storm Lords contributed a huge amount to the exploration of crafting and that they sacrificed a lot to make this available to everyone.

DDO Crafting Calculator by Zaodon
This is one of my favorites, but it does not offer any explanations so you need to understand crafting a bit before using it.

WIKI Crafting pages
This has a lot of additional information, especially about other types of crafting like attuning an item, increasing the hardness/durability of an item, and combining dragon shards. Its well worth the exploration time.

An Official Beginners Guide to The Eldritch Device
This is DDO's own introduction to the crafting process. It's meant to be basic so that we would have to find out the rest by experimentation, but its a start.

Eldritch Ritual Cookbook by Cambo
This is an excellent guide for the beginner. He has a lot of plain information and some links that will bring the beginner to a good understanding of the do's and don'ts of crafting.

--thats all for now, I'll be adding more later.
